Having arrived at South Bermondsey there was quite a large police presence when we exited the station. Football really doesn't matter when something like that happens.Getting away from the ground was really easy but we did have to wait for all the home fans to disperse. However, it is hardly a relaxing day out and I found the Den to be quite intimidating. Scottish left-back Barry Douglas had a free-kick 30 yards out, 92nd minute. Fans weren't made to sit down and I didn't witness any problems.
The home fans were friendly enough.Stewards were really friendly and helpful, normal facilities under the stand. As for the atmosphere, I said that the ground was intimidating and The Den has been in great voice when I've visited in the past but on this occasion, the home fans weren't great although they were quick to wind up the away fans after the equaliser. Having arrived back at London Bridge - and it was still baking hot - we decided to go for a couple more beers. As a result of this we didn't meet any home fans.As I always say to my wife size isn't everything! Millwall established a record of 59 home games without defeat at the Den from 22 August 1964 to 14 January 1967. As it was still early, my dad and me decided to brave a walk round the ground. There are quite a large number of home fans up for 'banter' As for the game itself we lost 1-0, a score line that quite honestly flattered us. Even the concourse feels tight, cramped and dingy compared to most other grounds. It's fair to say this wasn't Norwich's best performance of the season but equally, after last year's mauling, it was a very valuable three points. Into the ground easy enough.
From a Forest perspective, the game was nothing to write home about. Pandemonium in the away end! I appreciate this would be different for our friends from West Ham but for the general League One fan they shouldn't encounter too many problems at the ground. myself, my mrs, my mate & his mrs made the trip by car.We jumped on a bus outside the hotel (no cash taken for fares, so use contactless bank card or buy an oyster travel card) and headed for "The Bunch Of Grapes" pub on St Thomas St in the London Bridge area. Street parking can be found on the small estate on your left just past the ground, otherwise, be wary of on street parking restrictions around the area of the ground so check lamp posts for signage. That said, the inevitable hostile atmosphere and the presence of ex-Wolves players in the Millwall line-up meant it promised to be a tough afternoon for Nuno’s men. There was a cordon of about 20 police keeping an eye on proceedings which turned it all into a tourist attraction for passing tourists. This is a spooky place and the locals are hostile believe me. Also not far from these pubs on Tower Bridge Road is the 'Pommelers Rest' a Wetherspoons outlet. On the Borough High Street by London Bridge is the Barrow Boy & Banker, which is a Fullers pub and has the benefit of a large screen showing Sky Sports. During the early part of the 20th century, it was considered 'good form' for home fans to show their appreciation of good football displayed by the opposition.
However inside the station, it was packed with football fans making their way to their respective games in London, plenty of West Ham fans were there especially. Very tasty, but the beer is the standard plastic bottles of Carlsberg. After the match had ended all away fans were held in the ground for what seems like forever, but is probably about half hour. I enjoyed the Withens bottle-conditioned IPA on the train. We responded well, and Helder Costa missed a great chance to equalise, pulling down Ruben Neves’ pass superbly, only to blast the ball at the goalkeeper Jordan Archer. It would’ve been better had Nottingham Forest made an even match of it. Many players didn’t like to play there because the crowd … Millwall had been relegated last season and despite back to back away wins coming into this game they had lost 3 home games. No meal deal so a pie and a pint is about £8.80 from memory. The police will keep you in for about 1/2 hour to get the home fans away. Therefore, it was a 'low pressure' game for us which we could watch without any nerves/worries about what the result might be. The pies, drinks on offer were on the expensive side. Even better result, Don't believe what you read and see on TV about Millwall - They are a club who receive a lot of poor press when in reality safety of all fans is their number one priority. Cup of tea for £1. The atmosphere throughout the game was lively. The arrangement with away fans arriving at the Station and been sent down their own passageway to the away end seemed a very sensible idea.Charlton started slowly, which was a bad idea in the bear pit atmosphere created inside the ground by both sets of fans.
