This is not an easy book to read. The book was at many times shocking to read.

It is very compelling reading and I think would be an invaluable book for those who want to know more regarding this area.This is a well laid out book that covers a very large and important piece of Russian and Ukranian history .

It shows how the Soviet state ruthlessly used propaganda to turn neighbours against each other in order to expunge supposedly 'anti-revolutionary' elements. Disabling it will result in some disabled or missing features.
I had already read the great book 'The Big Show in Bololand' (bolshevik land) about the 1921 famine and Hoover's US relief program that saved countless lives from starvation. Review. The author documents the terrible famine that occurred in the Ukraine in the early 30s that resulted in death by starvation of millions of Ukrainian peasants. I became interested in the book for a number of reasons. Ir is a common feature of books on famines of the last two centuries, whether the focus is on Ireland, India, China, or Russia. She did state that there was, a famine all over (an unnatural famine) but Stalin had an agenda to crush Ukraine and thus enacted specific policies that killed a disproportionately large amount of Ukrainians. Devastating and definitive, Red Famine captures the horror of ordinary people struggling to survive extraordinary evil. But re the book; It was 40% in before she actually started talking about the famine itself. Ukrainian peasants, especially the Kulaks, that exercised resistance, were treated especially harsh. Her parents have recently died, unburdening her from the responsibility of caring for them. The book starts in 1917 and concludes in the present.

Sad. October 10th 2017 Despite this tragic history and subsequent struggles, the Ukraine stands today as an independent nation.This is the first book I’ve read by Applebaum, and I’m impressed.
